Voice Technique – Key To Control Your Voice

We all have an amazing vocal instrument. Once we get our hands into its endless possibilities, its full potential is within reach for anyone!

The purpose of voice technique can be looked at from different perspectives. An essential part of it is naturally healthy voice production: how can I sing the music styles and songs I love they way my voice doesn’t get tired or hoarse, or that it doesn’t hurt in my throat? Singing should always feel comfortable in the throat; there should never be a constricting or tickling feeling at the level of the true vocal folds. When vocal technique is in shape, singing doesn’t make one’s voice tired – instead the voice sort of warms up.

When one’s vocal control develops, a singer has many more ways to express themselves. The more sounds and range they have, the more options are at hand. It’s the same with a color palette of a painter artist: if a painter has 30+ paint colors on their palette together with several different paintbrushes, and another painter only has two colors and one paintbrush, it’s quite obvious which painter has more options in terms of expression. Still – a painter also has the right to use only one color from their palette of hundreds of colors, if they wish. This is a matter of artistry, and the decision is totally yours to make.

If you wish to vocally express an emotion of strong excitement in a climax part of a power ballad, for example, you might also want to know how to sing with power, to be able to express that emotion. On the other hand, in order to express a sad and soft emotion one might need to know how to produce a softer sound.

Practising vocal technique has great effects on the voice, such as getting more range and being able to sing with different sounds and emotions – in a healthy way. One can also practice to sing equally strongly in both low and high parts of the voice – or equally softly. How can I get more brightness in my voice? Or darkness and depth? Or maybe both brightness and darkness at the same time?
